The Akshaya Patra Foundation
Compassion helps connect people and we are proud to support the great work that The Akshaya Patra Foundation does. With help from us and thousands of others, the foundation can serve millions of children and vulnerable adults a hot meal every day.
With a vision that “No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger”, The Akshaya Patra Foundation started its midday meal programme in June 2000 serving food to children in schools across Bangalore, India. Children who might not have had the opportunity to attend school began doing so to receive a guaranteed hot meal. The programme helped keep many children at school and away from child labour.
The programme quickly expanded across India and now serves 1.8 million free school meals to children every single day.
Over 20 years later, the foundation now has branches in the UK and the USA. In the UK, the Akshaya Patra community kitchen serves around 3000 hot meals every day to adults, families and anyone at risk of hunger. The meals are cooked fresh each morning and distributed at 5 different locations across London.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the charity has cooked and distributed over 100,000 hot meals to the homeless and the vulnerable across London.
Please spread awareness of all the great work the charity is doing and help them reach even more people.
